8. A day in Grey

25th Nov 2013

Today we have an easy 5hr walk to Camp Grey and don't get going until 9.30. It was a short walk but many pictures were taken. When we arrive at Grey which is near the face of Grey Glacier we are disappointed to find that it is too windy for Kayaking and too warm for Ice Hiking, we opt to set up camp in the hope that the wind will settle down in the afternoon. We never did find out what the wind did as I climbed into the tent at 3pm and decided I was very tired and spent the rest of the day sleeping.

These forests takes a long time to recover from bush fire

We finally found out what the landslide symbols on the map meant

The other landslide

As the days pass the bridges are getting more sophisticated, we on the other hand are getting less sophisticated

Andrew is smiling now but 2 minutes before when he dropped his camera from up here...

to down here he wasn't, a knot in the strap caught on a cross piece and stopped the camera from falling the extra 2 meters down to the rocks below

Time for a selfie

We found another caterpillar
Lots of rental equipment available at Camp Grey.
Grey is an ok but not great camping area, it has a large grassy area of which almost none of it is level and any area that is level is still lumpy. It costs $8 per night per person and has a shop, toilets and showers. The showers have a limited supply of hot water in the evening, I didn't test this out as if I can't be guaranteed really hot water I'm not getting in a shower, besides if you only have dirty clothes to put on whats the point. We opted for a hot lunch, the only water we had purified I had added orange flavoring to, we were too hungry to wait the 2hrs for the purifying tablets to work ( we couldn't use the Steripen as the glacial water was full of sediments ) so it was we had Honey Soy Chicken with orange, if anything I think the orange improved the flavor. As the day turned into evening the camp ground population slowly increased and we could tell we were on the more popular 'w trek' part of the circuit now.

Refugio grey - the 'w trek' has many refugios along the way so those not inclined to camping can enjoy this part of the world. These fill up quickly in the peak season and need to be booked in advance
